All generic domain extensions and certain country-code ones support a security lock option whose purpose is to stop unsolicited transfers of existing domain names. Many registry organizations that manage country-code Top-Level Domains that do not support this feature are in the process of adopting it for better safety and for the convenience of the domain registrants. A domain name can be transferred only on the condition that it is unlocked and only a registrant who has access to the account with the current registrar can achieve that. New domains are registered with the lock feature enabled on purpose, so as to impede any unauthorized transfer attempts. The lock option is among the safety measures for controlling the transfer of active domain names between domain name registrars that have been introduced over the years.
